03 / Engineering narrative

The situation, the problem, and what changed.

  1. 01

    The situation

A PGM operation in Rustenburg suffered a two-day production halt after a critical conveyor belt mistracked under load. Multiple previously installed tracking products had failed to hold the belt true.

  2. 02

    The problem (root cause)

The belt repeatedly drifted off centre. Each previous tracking attempt either failed to correct or held only briefly under variable load.

  3. 03

    What Tru-Trac did

Tru-Trac assessed the application and installed two correctly specified belt trackers — one on the carry side after the load zone, one on the return side near the tail pulley.

  4. 04

    The outcome (measured result)

The belt centralised within 20 seconds and remained true under full load from the first shift. The site has since adopted the same tracker specification across similar belts.

  5. 05

    Why it worked

The selected trackers matched the operating envelope: belt width, speed, loading condition, and the position-specific corrective force required. Specification, not just product family, was the lever.
