Fixing conveyor belt mistracking is a sequence, not a single intervention. The correct order is: confirm structural alignment, observe the belt under loaded and unloaded conditions, check the material loading point, inspect idlers and pulleys for wear or contamination, verify the splice is square, then specify and install a tracker matched to the belt width, speed and the zone (carry or return) where correction is required. Skipping an upstream step is the most common reason mistracking returns within weeks of intervention. A tracker installed without addressing the underlying cause will fight the conveyor and wear out faster than expected.

Confirm structural alignment
Verify the conveyor frame is square, idler sets are aligned to the belt centreline, and pulleys are parallel. A tracker fighting a misaligned frame will wear out and won't hold.

Observe under load
Run the conveyor loaded and unloaded. Record where the belt drifts, in which direction, and how quickly it recovers when load conditions change.

Check material loading
Watch material loading at the load zone. Off-centre loading is the most common cause of mistracking and is fixed at the loading zone, not at the tracker.

Inspect idlers and pulleys
Identify seized, worn or contaminated idlers and replace them. Inspect the head and tail pulleys for material build-up; clean as required.

Verify the splice
Confirm the splice is square; check that elongation is even across the belt width. Splice issues cause recurring lateral pull on every belt revolution.

Specify and install the correct tracker
With upstream causes addressed, specify a tracker matched to belt width, belt speed, load conditions and the zone where lateral correction is required.

Carryback contamination on return idlers, OR worn return idlers, OR tail pulley contamination.
Belt drifts intermittently
Material build-up creating localised belt-lift, OR seized idler that engages periodically.
Belt drifts after a splice repair
Splice not square, OR elongation uneven across belt width.
Tracker installed but belt still drifts
Upstream cause not addressed, OR tracker undersized for belt width / speed / load.
