What causes conveyor belt mistracking.
Conveyor belt mistracking is the lateral movement of a belt away from its intended centreline. It is rarely caused by one thing. The most common drivers are off-centre material loading, structural misalignment of the conveyor frame, idler condition (worn, seized or contaminated), belt-tension variation across the belt, splice issues, and material build-up on idlers or pulleys. Each of these acts on the belt at a specific point on the conveyor, and the right correction depends on where in the belt path the cause originates. What mistracking is — and isn't.
Mistracking is the persistent lateral drift of the belt away from its intended centreline under operating conditions. A small amount of lateral movement is normal — belts breathe under load and respond to material distribution. Mistracking becomes a problem when the belt drifts far enough to contact structure, fray edges, spill material or trigger emergency stops.
Mistracking is NOT the same as alignment. Alignment refers to the geometry of the conveyor structure (frame square, idler alignment, pulley parallelism). Mistracking refers to belt behaviour relative to that alignment. A perfectly aligned conveyor can still mistrack; a mistracking belt is not automatically evidence of bad alignment.

Off-centre material loading
If material loads off-centre at the load zone, the belt feels asymmetric force and drifts toward the loaded side. This is the single most common cause and is fixed at the loading zone, not at the tracker.

Structural misalignment
Out-of-square frames, idler sets bolted off-line with the belt centreline, or pulleys not parallel. A tracker will fight a misaligned frame and wear prematurely.

Idler condition
Seized idlers, worn shells, contaminated bearings or idlers running out-of-round all change the belt-to-idler contact geometry. The belt responds laterally to that change.

Belt-tension variation
Uneven tension across the belt width — usually traceable to splice issues, take-up problems or worn pulleys — causes the belt to drift toward the slack side.

Splice issues
An out-of-square splice or a splice with uneven elongation across the belt width creates a recurring 'pull' as the splice passes through the system on every revolution.

Material build-up
Carryback or spillage that accumulates on return idlers or the tail pulley changes the local belt support geometry, causing the belt to lift and drift over the contaminated point.

What mistracking looks like before it becomes a problem.
The earlier symptoms are caught, the cheaper the correction. By the time the belt is contacting structure, secondary damage has already started.

Audible or visible contact between the belt edge and the conveyor frame, walkways, or structural steel.

Localised edge wear
One belt edge wears faster than the other — usually visible as fraying or cord exposure.

Material spillage along one side
Material consistently spills off one side of the belt at idler positions or transfer points.

Recurring emergency stops
Belt-drift switches trigger more frequently, even after adjustment, suggesting the belt has not returned to a stable lateral position.

Tail-pulley contamination
Spillage accumulating around the tail pulley indicates the belt is delivering material there — usually a return-side mistracking sign.

Verify the conveyor frame is square, idler sets are aligned to the belt centreline, and pulleys are parallel. No tracker corrects a misaligned frame.

Watch the belt under load and confirm material is loading on the belt centreline. Off-centre loading is the most common cause and is fixed at the loading zone.

Inspect idlers and pulleys
Replace seized, worn or contaminated idlers. Check the head and tail pulleys for material build-up; clean as required.

Verify the splice
If the belt has been spliced recently, confirm the splice is square and that elongation is even across the belt width.
